know our history

all good things start somewhere.

In 1970, a remarkable thing happened. In the midst of a popular, but ugly movement, that involved resisting integration, a group of people walked out of a large successful downtown Baptist church and formed the Baptist Church of the Covenant. The purpose of the march of freedom by the Company of the Committed was to allow anyone, particularly a black mother and daughter, to become members of the body of Christ through baptism and membership in a church.

Over the next decades, the history of Baptist Church of the Covenant became of defining mission. Since our founding on December 20, 1970 , we have ordained women to ministry and affirmed openness to sexual orientation and gender identity. We remain fervently committed to being a church dedicated to active ministry by sharing Christ with all people. As Christ accepts all who believe, we do likewise.

We are members of the Alabama Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the Baptist World Alliance, Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists, and the Alliance of Baptists.

You will find people of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life at Baptist Church of the Covenant. We are brought together by a shared belief in the power of faith to all who we encounter. We welcome you and hope you will find Baptist Church of the Covenant the best that the Baptist faith has to offer.
