In response to Jesus’ admonition to love and serve others, members of Baptist Church of the Covenant commit themselves to ministry. Ministry opportunities through BCOC are varied in scope and level of involvement. Please carefully consider ministries that are suited to your personal gifts, interests, and abilities.

mission statement

HAWLEY DHR CLOTHES CLOSET

The DHR Clothes Closet provides new or gently used clothing items for foster children. Volunteers go biweekly to sort and organize clothing items so that case workers can easily gather items to provide for foster parents. Please contact Pat Hawley if you are interested in serving.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY

Members create shawls, lap blankets and baby blankets for members and non-members who are new parents, dealing with illness or trauma. Participants meet periodically. They offer prayer for the anticipated recipients and encouragement for each other. Please contact Karen Smith if you are interested in serving.

GROCERY MINISTRY

Each Saturday, volunteers transport senior adults to the grocery store and shop for shut-ins. Volunteers are needed each week to drive and to assist.

COMMON TABLE

Each Wednesday night during the school year, we invite our neighbors to join with us in sharing a meal. You may volunteer by helping organize and host our guests or by paying for extra meals. Please contact Eric Clark if you are interested in serving.

TAKE WHAT YOU NEED

Take What You Need started several years ago as a ministry to our neighbors in the community. Bagged items are placed on the fence-line beside University Blvd. BCOC members and others in the community bring things they have to offer. Individuals or groups may bring items to restock the TWYN line. Food and medicines are not permitted. Other items, as long as they are zipped in a plastic bag, may be clipped to the line with clothespins (some provided). Please contact Sarah Leffel or Jeff Davison if you are interested in serving.

QUARTERLY MINISTRIES.

BCOC partners with other Birmingham area congregations to provide temporary housing for homeless families. For one week each quarter church members provide a safe, secure, and welcoming environment. Volunteers prepare and serve meals, host in the evening, or stay overnight.

ANNUAL MINISTRY EVENTS

COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY.

This is an intergenerational, churchwide day of service in the community for all members of our congregation. After the worship service, groups serve through local agencies to repair houses, paint offices, prepare and serve meals, clean, and do any number of hands-on tasks. This event requires many volunteers and several project coordinators. The Ministries Committee oversees this event.

TRUNK OR TREAT.

At BCOC, Halloween season is one of those huge opportunities to share wonderful hospitality every year and to inject some fun, light, and kindness into our neighborhood. Volunteers provide a safe place for families to trick or treat around the parking lot where trunks have been transformed into spooky carnival-like games. Candy and prizes, hotdogs and popcorn are shared freely until they run out! This event takes place on the Sunday evening prior to Halloween, October 31. Please contact the church office if you are interested in serving.

SEED CAMP.

Partnering with other churches through Alabama CBF and Sowing Seeds of Hope, BCOC youth and adults serve as day camp leaders for elementary children in Perry County. Volunteers provide recreation, literacy and STEM enrichment activities through summer programs held in the public schools while showing loving kindness and compassion. Please contact Eric Clark if you are interested in serving.

PRIDE FEST

Pride Fest is an event sponsored by Central Alabama Pride. Join others from BCOC to host a welcome tent to meet new people in the community, give away hugs or swag; and to share the bold hospitality of BCOC with LGBTQ+ neighbors and allies who need to know that a welcoming and affirming community of faith like BCOC exists. Please contact Andrew Reed if you are interested in serving.

Alabama Arise Legislative DAY

Alabama Arise Legislative Day is an annual opportunity for BCOC members to drive to the State House in Montgomery to join other members to meet lawmakers and make the case for policy changes to improve the lives of everyday Alabamians. We receive a policy briefing and participate in a news conference before we meet with our state legislators. We always leave energized after using our voices to advocate for all God's children in Alabama who, as Rep. Mary Moore says, "deserve the best all the time!"

Bread for the World Offering of Letters Campaign

During Lent, we raise our voices together to fight hunger through a letter writing campaign to Congress. Our individual letters combined with letters from other US congregations create a collective strength and become a powerful catalyst for inspiring legislative action and driving meaningful change.  As Christians, we are moved from the side-lines to the field, from despair to hope.

Writing letters is among the most effective methods for moving Congress to pass legislation that will improve the lives of many who have been forgotten, marginalized, and are suffering. God works through our letters. Years of persistent advocacy and voice has tripled poverty-focused development assistance to education, training, and sustainability measures that end hunger.
